Many of us rightly make the claim that we all belong to “one human race”, usually in response to people who engage in race politics or who use divisive language to spread harmful rhetoric. If it is always the case that people should be judged on their content rather than the colour of their skin, as most of us with good reason believe, then perhaps it should not be such a big deal if a person with more melanin in her skin is cast to play the role of an Egyptian Queen or even an imaginary fairy.

What do you think? Is it a big deal? Why/why not?

It's not a big deal, but the media would make a huge fuss if a white person were cast in a black character role!

The issue is that this is a documentary. Westerners of all ancestries constantly remake and reshape other cultures and civilisations to suit their own wants and agendas: Materially poor but spiritually rich Indians, Victims of the white man Africans, matriarchal non-gendered native Americas, problematic East asians.... the list goes on. This is an example of using another people's history and reappropriating it for Western ends. No African claims Egypt, because they know their own cultures and histories and are proud of them.

I like your take, personally I feel this was done to appease an agenda. It’s certainly done a great job of further fuelling a race divide. 🙄
If the true focus was on her achievements then finding an actress that fit physically somewhere in the middle of all stereotypes (seeing as her heritage is questionable) it would allow for her achievements to be the sole focus.
It’s focus now is just racial, shame really because her story should just be one of a strong, intelligent woman.

Then again, god forbid 2023 depicts strong women!! 🤦🏻‍♀️
